Take the rococo/empire style chair in the photo below. The chair was handed down through my client's family. The rococo style turned heads in England back in 1730 even though it had reached it's peak in France by then. This chair has your standard rococo period style with lively curves and interlaced with flowers on the back hold and notice how the legs curve inward to reflect the Empire period popular in 1800's in France. The fabric I used to give it a modern twist is a micro fiber-suede in burnt orange. I think the fabric tones down the chair's busy curves and pattern and compliments the finish giving the chair a contemporary look. Today maybe some people find this chair style too traditional and would ignore it's popular appeal in design & architecture history. I on the other hand like to apply a compliment of furniture styles to a room. This type of chair would look great in an eclectic motif for anyone looking for additional seating or who has a small space with the need for extra seating. Keep rococo and the empire style in mind when you want to add a conversation piece or focal point to your decor. These pieces can be found at many antique markets you just have to know where to look. Good hunting.

Decorative ceilings

Many people have seen decorative ceilings some are original works of art and others are a poor excuse for design. The poor excuse for a designed ceiling we have all seen in newer homes and known as "popcorn" ceiling. I don't like this type of ceiling although it will take a lot of work to remove it and there are options it's not the type of decorative ceiling I speak of. The type I would call decorative are rarely done these days since the artisans are practically extinct who do this type of work.
Ceilings with skim coat of plaster in a random design and circles are very welcoming in my opinion. I heard recently on a decorating program that home buyers don't want this type of ceiling and home sellers are opting to drywall over top of it. I don't understand I think a decorative ceiling is more appealing then a plain drywalled one. I have one in my living room and would never cover it up. I would however, add pot lights as it would improve the lighting in the room and the ambiance too. Think twice when someonte suggests you cover up your decorative ceilings when theres nothing wrong with them. Sometimes there's no accounting for good taste.

BALANCE YOUR LIFE.

Part of the biggest challenge in my decorating client's lives is to find time to do the basic small chores in life. When the small stuff is done the big stuff will fall into place. Like the need to clean out your closet or a drawer. Is it me or am I the only one that finds cleaning out a drawer, closet or room very satisfying. I know, who can find the time. Sometimes life dictates it. Like when you get more new tops for Christmas than you thought you'd get and the necessity to organize and balance your space arises. You have no choice but to get rid of your favourite worn out tops and make room for new ones to become favourites. Once you have given yourself permission to throw away the really old faithful ones it's amazing how easy the new ones become the favourites and you have balance in your life again and at the same time you appreciate your decor choices and enjoy the room or you finally realize that organizing your closets or drawers was just the tip of the iceberg. That's my goal to motivate and help people discover their need to make change in their decorating schemes and appreciate their space.

DECORATING DECISION

Welcome to my blog.
